Passage: Mark 12:35–37

In uncertain times, it's easy to look to political leaders for a sense of security and assurance, hoping they’ll bring stability, prosperity, and protection. Yet, even if our leader wins, we often find ourselves disappointed. As we anticipate the upcoming election, it's timely to remember that lasting assurance cannot come from any leader, but One.

In Mark 12:35-37, Jesus questions the limited expectations of the Messiah. He asks,

“How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David? David himself, in the Holy Spirit, declared,

‘The Lord said to my Lord,

“Sit at my right hand,

until I put your enemies under your feet.”’

David himself calls him Lord. So how is he his son?”

The answer to this question gives us more than we expect, even as we often do not look beyond earthly assurance.
