The Betrayal

Preacher: Todd Odenath Series: The Gospel of Mark Scripture: Mark 14:10–21

Betrayal is one of the deepest cuts we can experience. It might come from a close friend who let you down or a confidant who broke your trust. The pain feels personal, raw, and can linger long after the moment has passed.

In Mark 14:10–21, we witness the most infamous betrayal in history: Judas plotting to hand over Jesus to the authorities. Scripture recounts:

"Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them. And when they heard it, they were glad and promised to give him money. And he sought an opportunity to betray him." (Mark 14:10–11, ESV)

How could a man who walked with Jesus for years—witnessing His miracles, hearing His teaching, and experiencing His love—turn against Him? It’s easy to condemn Judas from a distance, but this passage invites us to look closer at our own hearts. Even the other disciples, when Jesus announced the betrayal, asked, “Is it I?”

In this sermin we reflect on the ways this passage calls us to trust in Christ, examine our loyalties, and remember God’s redemptive plan in the midst of human sin.
