The Arrest

What caused the disciples to declare they would die with Jesus, only hours later, to abandon Him as we read, "they all left him and fled" (v. 50)?

In Mark 14:43–52, we see the disciples' reaction to the arrest of Jesus. As Judas approaches with an armed crowd, one of the disciples draws a sword, but Jesus immediately rebukes him. Jesus doesn’t resist but instead states that these events fulfill Scripture. Then, the disciples all run away. Why?

Their desire for self-preservation drove them to abandon the One who had always been their protector, healer, and friend. What they failed to realize was that the safest place to be—even in the face of danger—is near Christ.
