The Denial
Preacher: Todd Odenath Series: The Servant Son of God Scripture: Mark 14:66–72
Peter’s problem is ours: we think just confidently stating something will mean that we will follow through on a promise. Peter, who confidently promised his loyalty to Jesus, in the same night would emphatically state this:
[71] But he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know this man of whom you speak.” (Mark 14:71, ESV)
Mark 14:66-72 confronts us with the notion that our own words or efforts can ensure success or salvation. Instead, it points us to the truth that only Christ’s steadfast grace can restore us when we stumble. As we reflect on Peter’s failure, we see that genuine transformation comes not from our declarations, but from our dependence on the redeeming love of our Savior.
