The Resurrection
Preacher: Todd Odenath Series: The Servant Son of God Scripture: Mark 16:1–8
When 'hope' is just a slogan, do we recognize the real thing? It’s a word splashed across political campaigns, woven into the scripts of blockbuster movies, and spoken in moments of tragedy as a vague reassurance that things will get better. But with such overuse, has the word lost its weight? Has it become so commonplace that, when something truly life-altering occurs, we might not even recognize it for what it is?
In Mark 16:1-8, we will see that the women who approached the tomb of Jesus weren’t expecting the resurrection. Their arms were full of burial spices, not hope. So, the angel’s message—“He has risen”—was not just unexpected; it was so beyond their frame of reference that they were struck with fear and fled in silence.
How would we react to this scene? Are we going through our lives with the empty hope of the world, or with the hope that only the resurrection of Jesus can provide?
