Self-Willed Worship
Preacher: Todd Odenath Series: Exodus Scripture: Exodus 20:4–6
In Exodus 20:4–6 the Lord commands: “You shall not make for yourself a carved image… You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God.” This passage teaches that true worship must be according to God’s Word, not our own imagination. Even when we confess the true God, we can slip into self-willed worship—reshaping Him into something manageable, safe, and according to our desires. But God calls us to worship Him as He truly is, in Spirit and in Truth, with reverence and awe. Join us for this sermon on the Second Commandment as we consider what it means to worship the Lord rightly, why images of God (even of Jesus) are forbidden, and how Christ Himself is the perfect revelation of God’s glory.
