What does your name mean? For many of us, our names carry family connections, stories, values, or even hopes our parents had for us. Some think of the reputation our name carries among friends, coworkers, or neighbors. A name is more than letters on a page—it represents who you are.
But, what comes to mind when you think of the name of the LORD?
In this sermon, we will look at the third commandment: “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.” (Exodus 20:7, ESV) God’s name is not just a label, it reveals His holy character and covenant presence. To take His name lightly, whether in words, in worship, or in life, is to treat Him lightly. Yet as we will see, this command also drives us to the One who perfectly honored His Father’s name, and who bore the guilt of those who have not.
