In this sermon, we move from the first table of the Ten Commandments, our duties to God, to the second, our duties to one another. The transition begins close to home, in fact, in the home. Our duty to love our neighbor as ourselves begins with our parents. The fifth commandment extends far beyond family, though, touching every relationship where God has established order and authority.
At the heart of this command lies the root sin of rebellion that lives in us all. Our natural resistance to honor those whom God has placed over us comes from the fall. Scripture shows that this dishonor toward others is ultimately a reflection of our dishonor toward God Himself.
But, Christ is the truly obedient Son who honored His Father perfectly and, through His obedience unto death, restores those who believe into right relationship with not only one another but with God our Father.
