In this sermon, we continue through the Ten Commandments with Exodus 20:16: “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.” At its most basic level, this command uses legal language. It confronts perjury, false testimony, and any distortion of truth that harms a neighbor. But Scripture will not let us stop there. The command reaches far deeper than the courtroom, revealing our heart that bends truth, covers truth, and weaponizes truth. It exposes our fear of man, our desire to protect our own name, and our unwillingness to entrust ourselves to God.
We will see how this command not only reveals sin but also shows our need for the One who is perfectly true. Christ is the faithful and true witness, the only One whose words never deceive and whose righteousness covers our sin.
