Over-Promising Before A Holy God
Preacher: Todd Odenath Series: Exodus Scripture: Exodus 24:1–18
You are familiar with the human tendency to over-promise. We often confuse conviction with capacity. What begins with good intentions frequently ends in disappointment. We recognize this in others, but rarely in ourselves, and even less when it comes to God.
In Exodus 24, at a pivotal moment at Mount Sinai, God ratifies His covenant with Israel. Twice the people respond to God’s word by saying, “All that the LORD has spoken we will do.” The passage presses a sobering question beneath their confident words: what happens when people promise more than they are able to deliver?
The sprinkled blood of the covenant makes clear that the stakes are high. When the promise is broken, a faithful Mediator will be needed.
