The Sanctification of the Sabbath
Preacher: Todd Odenath Series: Exodus Scripture: Exodus 31:12–18
What is the greatest means of our sanctification?
In Exodus 31:12–18, the Sabbath is given again in the context of building the tabernacle. What takes place there is the worship of God, yet the Lord requires a rest from all other work. Even in preparing a place for His presence, His people must first cease and remember that the work that matters most is not theirs, but His.
The purpose is made explicit:
“Above all you shall keep my Sabbaths… that you may know that I, the LORD, sanctify you.” (Exodus 31:13, ESV)
The Sabbath is more than a command; it is a sign of identity. It marks Israel as a people set apart, belonging to the Lord. By ceasing from their labor, they declare that they are not defined by what they produce, but by the God who sanctifies them. The day itself teaches them to know Him, not merely in thought, but in lived dependence.
The work that remains is worship, because He is holy. Those who worship Him in spirit and truth are being sanctified by Him.
So, can keeping the Sabbath truly sanctify us? Only if we rest in the One who truly kept it.
