Exodus 32 exposes the danger of worship shaped by human desire instead of God’s revealed will. While Moses is on the mountain, the people grow impatient and demand a visible substitute. The Lord declares, “They have turned aside quickly out of the way that I commanded them… they have made for themselves a golden calf and have worshiped it” (Exodus 32:8, ESV).
This passage shows how quickly the human heart turns from hearing God’s Word to reshaping Him according to personal preference. False worship always begins by redefining God.
True worship works in the opposite direction. Rather than shaping God, we are shaped by Him through His Word, by His Spirit, and through Jesus Christ, the true and final object of worship. Because God is holy and His wrath is real, we need a mediator who can bear judgment and restore us to right worship.
This sermon examines the golden calf, the seriousness of false worship, and how Christ alone enables us to worship God in spirit and truth.
