The First Love of the Law

After a season of walking through the Ten Commandments at Sinai, Matthew 22:34–40 brings us to the heart of God’s law.
When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, one of them, a lawyer, came to test Him: “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” Jesus answered by quoting the Shema from Deuteronomy 6: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”
This first of two sermons considers how the law of God reaches deeper than outward conduct. It exposes the heart, the desires, and the devotion of the whole person. The question is not merely, “What have you done?” but “What do you truly love?”
