The Second Love of the Law
Preacher: Todd Odenath Series: Stand Alone Sermons Scripture: Matthew 22:39–40
What does it mean to love your neighbor as yourself?
In Matthew 22:34–40, Jesus summarizes the law with two great commandments: love God and love neighbor. In this second part of “The Love of the Law,” we consider Jesus’ command: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
Jesus is not replacing the law with a vague idea of love. He says, “On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” Love summarizes the Ten Commandments; it does not replace them. It deepens what God requires of us.
This sermon considers what it means to love our neighbor, how this love fulfills the moral aim of God’s law, and why our love for neighbor can never be the foundation of our standing before God. Christ loved us when we were unlovely, not merely as neighbors, but as enemies reconciled by His grace.
